About the event

Romances, arias by Cherubini, Pergolese, Garat, Jadin, Mehul, Boieldieu, Grétry
From her earliest childhood, Marie-Josèphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie showed a particular interest in music. Not being a skilled musician herself, she was more active and prolific as a patron of the arts, and apparently she had a nose for talent!

Her union with General Bonaparte in 1796, gave her a status that allowed her to have influence in the orientation of "French taste" and to open it to a more European dimension. She was also known to support morally and financially the young interpreters and composers of the time from whom she received scores from all over Europe.

It is said that once a week, Josephine gave concerts at Malmaison. The artists would set up in the music salon, with the audience taking their seats amidst the paintings and antiques in the adjoining large gallery. Harp, piano forte and other instruments resounded in the salon in romances, opera arias and chamber music pieces. One can even read that a small theater was built as an annex to the castle in order to be able to perform and create operas. She seems to have given an important place to Italian music, helping artists such as Paisiello, Paër or Spontini.

This real infatuation of Josephine for lyrical art, and more particularly for Italian opera, served Napoleon's artistic policy. Under her impetus, Malmaison became a privileged place for musical experiments: she gave previews of great operas long before they were performed in Paris.

Thanks to the various sources of the time, we have been able to recreate what a salon at Empress Josephine's home might have looked like: French and Italian opera arias transcribed for the piano mingling with the charming melodies sung at the time in the salons of the Court and written by composers such as Cherubini, Pergolese, Garat, Jadin, Mehul, Boieldieu, or even Grétry.
